Yale-NUS College expands tertiary level education in Art
The College welcomes its inaugural Director of Art and new faculty members as it expands its arts programme
Yale-NUS College deepens its expertise in the arts with the appointment of additional faculty spanning various fields such as visual arts, creative and professional writing and music performance and appreciation. Students can look forward to arts courses in both theory and practical applications, as well as cross-disciplinary courses such as music and neuroscience as well as modern Chinese literature and film. The slate of new courses will be announced later in the year.
Since its establishment in 2011, Yale-NUS College has been offering students 14 majors, including one in arts and humanities. The Arts and Humanities major is focused on addressing the core elements of human expression from historical, critical, comparative, and practice-based perspectives.
To signal its commitment to the arts programme, the College has appointed Professor Mark Joyce as its inaugural Director of Art and Professor in the Practice of Art. He will oversee the development of the arts curriculum and arts-related co-curricular activities. An award-winning visual artist, Professor Joyce’s recent research interests involve the historical, scientific and philosophical concepts of physical light. He has held solo exhibitions in Ireland, UK and the USA. Professor Joyce has also curated exhibitions in the Netherlands and Australia. His work can be found in the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Arts Council of Ireland. Prior to joining Yale-NUS College, Professor Joyce was the Visual Arts Practices Programme Coordinator in the Faculty of Film, Art and Creative Technologies at the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology in Ireland.
The teaching and learning of the arts curriculum at the College will be supported by state-of-the-art facilities such as a performance hall, art studios, dance studios and a black box theatre in the College’s new campus which will open in 2015. Students can look forward to practice-based studio courses to develop their artistic talent in a variety of mediums. It will be a major creative hub for the College and a busy part of students’ co-curricular activities and individual coursework.
When asked about his plans for the College, Professor Joyce said, “The new facility will provide an ideal space for courses, seminars, workshops, demonstrations, visiting speakers, events and exhibitions. It will be a dynamic space to learn, practice and perform art in all forms. I am expecting a lot of activity and a lively exchange of ideas about contemporary art with the students.”
New Faculty Members
In addition to Professor Joyce, the College also welcomes three new faculty members who specialise in creative writing, music and modern Asian Art to augment the teaching of its arts programme – Assistant Professors Heidi Stalla, Jason Rosenberg, and Nozomi Naoi.
Ms Heidi Stalla specialises in early 20th century British literature and has won awards of excellence for teaching for four consecutive years from 2006 – 2009, during her time at New York University. Mr Jason Rosenberg has taught courses on Music Theory & Analysis, Music History, American Experimental Music, and Psychology of Music among many others. He has also conducted in international festivals. Dr Nozomi Naoi’s research interests include modern Japanese prints and visual culture, the development of new media technologies in modern and contemporary Asia as well as the evolving forms of female imagery in East Asian art and design.
These three faculty members will join a number of Yale-NUS faculty, including the Director of Writing Programme Professor Robin Hemley, Associate Professor Sarah Weiss, and Assistant Professor Maria Taroutina, in developing the arts programme.
The addition of the new faculty members brings the total number of Yale-NUS College faculty members to 70. Instead of traditional academic departments, Yale-NUS faculty members belong to one of three broad divisions: Science, Social Sciences or Humanities, which enables interdisciplinary teaching and learning at the College.
