Safe Management Measures at Yale-NUS since 2020

Since 2020, we endeavoured to continue our residential life activities in its physical form for as long as we could enable it and where we could not, it took on exciting new virtual forms that reflect the ingenuity and creativity of our community.

Our students have been utilising e-learning platforms since February 2020. We also provided the option for our students, both local and international  to leave campus and finish the semester remotely via e-learning. In early 2020, when the situation had worsened internationally, all classes were moved to e-learning and students were encouraged to return home if they were able to. All face-to-face examinations and tests were conducted through alternative modes such as online examinations or assignments. If students had specific and immediate concerns, they were advised to contact their individual professors to discuss alternatives. In AY 2020/21, with pandemic condition stabilising, the vast majority of classes were conducted face-to-face with safe management measures in place to ensure faculty and students remain well. E-learning however continued as an approved option for students who were unable to attend physical classes. Since AY 2021/22, all students have resumed classes and community activities physically on campus while adhering to existing safe management measures.

As a community of learning, we aim to help our students focus on learning while setting aside, as far as we can, their worries about achievement metrics. Our faculty have responded flexibly to students’ needs without losing sight of fulfilling a student’s learning objectives, expanding their range of grading options to lessen student stress and anxiety. For Semester 2 of AY 2019/20, all students could opt to exercise the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) option for any module taken. However, students were cautioned to seek advice from their academic advisor on whether choosing such an option might impact how a future professional or graduate school would view their transcript. Learn more about the S/U option .

Despite the unprecedented hurdles faced by faculty, staff and students due to the pandemic, the community has remained steadfast in its commitment to teaching and learning. The Educational Resources & Technology (ERT) Department has been providing key support for flexible and agile responses to the challenges introduced by COVID-19 and will continue to do so.

All these have been made possible due to the willingness of our staff and faculty to go above and beyond, and the collaboration of our students as they adapt quickly to each change. Our long-term goal remains to ensure the well-being of everyone in our community as we continue to fulfil our mandate to provide an educational experience of quality for our students.
