Latest@Yale-NUS Feature on Experimental Methods
A recent Latest@Yale-NUS article on experiential learning highlighted Experimental Methods in Physical Sciences (YSC2246) for its unique hands-on pedagogical approach and final project. In Experimental Methods, which was co-developed by Professors Ben Olsen and Stan Presolski, students learn about making measurements in the lab and how fundamental ideas from physics and chemistry are used to develop new scientific devices. For the final project, students design and build their own measurement-making device, motivated by real-world questions, using skills from optics to soldering to 3D printing. This course fulfils the Physical Sciences Major’s laboratory requirement, and sets students up to succeed in more advanced laboratory courses. Experimental Methods is being offered next semester and can be useful to students in many majors, so interested students should reach out to Profs Olsen or Presolski if they have any questions!
