Yale-NUS College to offer two new degree programs in Law & Environmental Studies
Double degree in Law from NUS or concurrent graduate degree in Environmental Studies from Yale in five years
The Yale-NUS College (Yale-NUS) today announced two additional degree programmes, in Law and in Environmental Studies, for students at the new College.
Students at Yale-NUS, a landmark collaboration between Yale University and NUS, are expected to graduate with honours degrees in arts or science in four years. With the additional degree programmes, a student who qualifies could graduate with a second bachelors’ degree in Law from NUS or masters’ degree in environmental studies from Yale for an additional year of study.
Said Professor Lily Kong, the Acting Executive Vice-President (Academic Affairs) at Yale-NUS: “A Yale-NUS education will widen the horizons of our students both intellectually and experientially with an exciting curriculum, global internships and co-curricular activities. The two new degree programs we have developed combine the breadth and depth of liberal arts education with the depth that comes with specialisations, whether in Law or environmental studies. We are confident that these opportunities will appeal to high-achieving students at Yale-NUS.”
Yale-NUS’ Bachelor of Arts (Honours) – Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Double Degree Programme will provide students with an education that integrates the sciences, humanities and social sciences as well as legal professional training for prospective lawyers over five years. With this programme, a combination of liberal arts and law studies can be pursued in five years, compared to the typical period of seven years required in the United States. As part of the programme, Yale-NUS students will have access to the NUS Faculty of Law’s study abroad and internship opportunities in Asia and beyond. NUS Law is widely regarded as Asia’s leading law school, and a major hub for research on legal issues affecting Singapore, the region and globally.
Yale-NUS students graduating with the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) Honours degree qualify to be admitted to the Singapore Bar to practice law in Singapore. NUS Law graduates presently occupy the highest legal offices in Singapore, including the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, and senior practitioners in all areas of law. Alumni also include partners in top international firms in New York and London, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
Yale-NUS’ concurrent degree offering with the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (Yale F&ES) is designed for students who want to pursue careers in an environmental field. Eligible students will graduate with Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or Bachelor of Science (Honours) degrees from Yale-NUS, and a Master of Environmental Science (MES) or Master of Environmental Management (MEM) degree from Yale University after five years of study.
As part of this program, Yale-NUS students will spend one semester during their junior year at Yale College in New Haven, Connecticut, in the US.
As part of its admissions outreach, Yale-NUS will be launching a special inaugural round of admissions in early February 2012 for qualifying National Service men in Singapore, as well as students who have completed their A-Levels and International Baccalaureate diplomas last year. About 150 students are expected to matriculate in August 2013.
