Yale-NUS College launches President’s Speaker Series
Prominent speakers include Rappler CEO Maria Ressa, Film Director Anthony Chen and Writer Pico Iyer
Yale-NUS College is bringing liberal arts to the community by launching a series of public lectures with key personalities and influential experts. The Yale-NUS President’s Speaker Series showcases accomplished and talented luminaries from around the world. The lectures are designed for a broad audience, enabling the community to learn from and engage with some of the brightest academics and practitioners in a diverse range of disciplines on contemporary issues in our world today.
To kick-off the series, Maria Ressa, a journalist based in Philippines, author of two books on terrorism and social networks and CEO of Rappler, will helm a public lecture titled “From Bin Laden to Facebook: The Power of Social Networks“ where she will discuss the spread of emotions and ideas through social networks and the challenges for law enforcement in the 21st century. This lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 6.30pm, 11 September 2013 at UTown Auditorium 3, College of Alice and Peter Tan at University Town, National University of Singapore. Other speakers who will be speaking at the Yale-NUS President’s Speaker Series this year include Pico Iyer, a renowned essayist and travel writer, and Anthony Chen, a distinguished Singaporean film director and producer. Beyond open lectures, the Yale-NUS community will enjoy small informal chats, workshops, and Q&A sessions with the guest speakers, allowing for a variety of intimate learning experiences. Such events foster not only a curiosity for knowledge but also an appreciation of the diversity and free exchange of ideas, building the foundations for Yale-NUS students to become leaders in tomorrow’s world.
Yale-NUS College is Singapore’s first liberal arts college with a full residential program that integrates learning and living. Students at the College are taught by leading educators and distinguished researchers from around the world. Collectively shaped by the 50-strong inaugural faculty, the unique Yale-NUS Common Curriculum, together with the residential college system, enables students and faculty to learn together, not just in the classrooms, but more intentionally in communal settings, creating lively exchanges of ideas and opinions in a community of learning.
