Urban Experimentation in Southeast Asia: Novel Solutions to Emerging Challenges

Southeast Asian cities are facing challenges from all sides, including growing urban density, threats posed by climate change and strained transportation networks. In response, many actors ranging from enterprising start-ups to regional and national governments have transformed challenges into opportunities by experimenting with novel forms of urban practice, design and policy. For example, Southeast Asian governments across all levels (national, regional, local) have been actively exploring innovative farming solutions to achieve food security and sustainability. Non-profits have also been boldly testing different approaches to participatory governance to support ordinary citizens in shaping their urban futures.

Through this panel, Yale-NUS College and the Young Urbanists of Southeast Asia hope to bring attention to the region’s role as an exciting space for urban innovation and experimentation. Above all, we aim to shed light on how youths across Southeast Asia can actively contribute to the betterment of their urban environments, as well as connect youths with academics and practitioners in the field, so that new ideas and synergies may emerge.

This event is organised by Yale-NUS College, in partnership with the Young Urbanists of Southeast Asia.
