As concerns about income inequality become more prevalent, meritocracy – a common organising principle of education systems and job markets – has attracted criticism in recent years. In this conversation on the future of meritocracy, Daniel Markovits, Guido Calabresi Professor of Law at Yale Law School and author of The Meritocracy Trap; and Lynette Chua, Associate Professor of Social Sciences (Socio-legal Studies; Law & Society) and Associate Professor of Law at NUS Law School, discuss the critique of meritocracy and how it might be reimagined.

Daniel Markovits is the Guido Calabresi Professor of Law at the Yale Law School, and the Founding Director of the Yale Center for the Study of Private Law. He is the author of The Meritocracy Trap.

Lynette Chua is a law and society scholar with research interests in legal mobilisation, legal consciousness, and rights, power, and resistance. She is also Head of Studies of the Double Degree Programme in Law and Liberal Arts and Rector of Elm College at Yale-NUS College.
