With relative power of states shifting from the West to the East and South, the US-led liberal order is challenged. What are the key analytical frameworks to capture the dynamic processes of cooperation under power transition? Professor Prantl argues the ongoing changes transform global governance as we know it. There is growing recourse to alternative mechanisms of collective action, e.g. the G20; Belt and Road Initiative; BRICS; and AIIB to name a few. Those diverse mechanisms are platforms for contestation, renegotiation, and potential transformation. The prospects for a new master narrative, along with new frameworks of global governance, may ultimately replace the liberal order.

ABOUT PROFESSOR JOCHEN PRANTL

Professor Jochen Prantl’s research focuses on global governance, international security, and strategic diplomacy. Previously, he taught and held positions at the University of Oxford, Yale University, National University of Singapore, Waseda University, and Nanyang Technological University. He also served in the Policy Planning Unit of the UN Department of Political Affairs and the Delegation of the European Commission to the UN in New York. Prior to his academic career, he worked in financial services with Allianz SE. This talk draws from his latest book project on The Crisis of Liberal Institutions, under contract with Oxford University Press.
