Trump’s Confederate Fallacies, Huffington Post, 19 August 2017

In an op-ed on Huffington Post blog, Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple Visiting Professor at Yale-NUS, Bryan Van Norden discussed monuments to George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, which were put up to honour the ideals they stood for and not the vices they manifested at their worst. In contrast, statues to Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson were erected precisely as a visual reminder to people of colour that their neighbours and coworkers were unwilling to accept them as equal citizens.
