A guest of the President’s Speaker Series, Mr Pico Iyer, a renowned American essayist and travel writer, recalls the importance of silence in one’s life at Yale-NUS College, where he coached its students for two days. His big idea is simply that, more than ever, everyone must consciously retreat regularly from the hubbub of everyday life, to make sense of it and decide where one should go next. He said, “You need that balance of stillness and movement, stimulation and quiet. You need to be in touch with the world, but not hostage to it.”
