Raffles who? 200 years since the British colonialist, Singapore would rather he disappear, South China Morning Post, 27 January 2019

The South China Morning Post carried an article on Singapore’s bicentennial celebrations and “commemoration of Raffles’ landing”. Professor Tan Tai Yong who is also a member of the advisory panel for the bicentennial noted that the authorities planned to look back 200 years into the past which would assume that the start point is in 1819, however, research by Singapore historians has evidence that Singapore’s history dates before that and to say Singapore’s history began in 1819 would be incorrect. There has also been a debate on whether Singapore’s bicentennial celebrates colonialism.
