Joint China-Asean naval exercise a way “to build trust”, TODAY, 24 October 2017

In a TODAY article on the first joint naval exercise by China and ASEAN, Assistant Professor of Social Sciences (Political Science) Chin-Hao Huang who was interviewed for his expert opinion said that the naval exercise would likely be the first practical application of the Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea – an agreement reached in 2014 – in the South China Sea. He added that Asean was taking a more proactive and cohesive approach towards Beijing, as there was a collective interest in pooling together their influence to ensure that Chinese activities in the South China Sea are going to be in line with regional interests.
