Looking into Singapore’s 60 years of citizenship, The Straits Times carried comments from various thought leaders on whether Singapore was ready for dual citizenship. Yale-NUS President Tan Tai Yong opined that Singapore “may be losing good people” when Singaporeans living abroad are forced to give up their citizenship. President Tan noted that the honorary citizenship, which Singapore grants to a very select group of foreigners who have made outstanding contributions to the country, is an example of an in-between option, as compared to the binary yes-or-no discussions on dual citizenship.
