Channel NewsAsia’s current affairs programme Insight examined two current global issues which Assistant Professor of Social Sciences (Political Science) Chin-Hao Huang shared his views. These were China’s approval on the removal of the two-term Presidential limit, which will potentially allow President Xi Jinping to rule for life and the impact this will have on the world; and impending peace treaty talks between the US and North Korea to ease accumulative tensions between both countries. On President Xi Jinping’s ‘life-long’ presidency term, Dr Huang shared that President Xi is motivated to pursue his ‘Chinese dream’, the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and realise it by 2021, which will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Communist party. He also added that this would have good economic impact for the region but there would also be global wariness on a China that continues to grow from strength to strength. On the impending peace treaty talks, Dr Huang shared that there is skepticism among critics regarding this as North Korea has a history of going against its promises in similar situations. He added that the only way to determine sincerity in this matter would be to gauge intentions from both parties during their meetings. Dr Huang noted though, that the willingness to discuss a peace treaty is a positive development and much better than using coercive actions.
