Coronavirus Economic Impact: SE Asia faces economic turmoil due to COVID-19, CGTN, 10 April 2020

China Global Television Network (CGTN) carried a broadcast report that discussed how the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted economies in the Southeast Asia region and that Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand are likely to face recession this year. Yale-NUS Visiting Professor of Social Sciences (Economics) Edward John Driffill discussed the World Bank report’s findings of the impact of the pandemic on Thailand, which had already been facing severe drought. Prof Driffill explained that the country is very badly affected by the “collapse of tourism and the hospitality business” as this sector makes up 16% of Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) and opined that it would be crucial for governments to step in and support the poor and those facing with financial struggles.
