Commentary: Maids’ overtime pay is long overdue, Channel NewsAsia, 9 April 2018

Channel NewsAsia carried a commentary piece by Associate Professor of Social Sciences (Sociology and Public Policy) Anju Mary Paul who wrote that more could be done to safeguard the welfare of foreign domestic workers.

Noting that many foreign domestic workers consent to give up their rest days in order to pay off the heavy debt incurred to come to work in Singapore, Assoc Prof Paul suggested that foreign domestic workers who give up their rest day for more than half of their daily working hours should be paid two days’ salary if it was at the employer’s request, similar to workers who fall under Singapore’s Employment Act. Assoc Prof Paul argued that there should not be a lower standard for more vulnerable classes of worker, such as foreign domestic workers, who are currently excluded from coverage under the Act.
