Commentary: Bicentennial can be a worthwhile endeavour, Channel News Asia, 24 December 2018

Channel NewsAsia carried an commentary written by President and Professor of Humanities (History) Tan Tai Yong about Singapore’s upcoming Bicentennial initiative. He noted that the Bicentennial has to be sensitively framed and shaped to be an inclusive process. While the state might want to take a lead in terms of coordination of effort and resources, it should, as far as possible, refrain from imposing a top down, state-curated event. Instead, this could be used as an opportune occasion to stimulate an organic effervescence, inspiring people to be an active part of an effort to engage history.
