Channel NewsAsia carried a commentary piece by Assistant Professor of Social Sciences Chin-Hao Huang regarding US President Donald Trump’s recent highly anticipated visit to Asia. Dr Huang opined that although Trump had managed to address certain key issues and strengthened his relationships with his allies like China, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines, he did not provide a clear vision on a number of important strategic issues. For example, there was limited clarity on US leadership’s role in Asia and partners were not reassured about how future trade relations with the region would pan out. He added that Trump also missed the opportunity to reaffirm the importance of the US-ASEAN Connect initiative that was formed in 2016, which would have been a good way to mark ASEAN’s 50th anniversary this year. Dr Huang further discussed Trump’s future strategy and vision in Asia, explaining that a better understanding of its regional politics and priorities was needed.
