Provost, Singapore University of Technology and Design
Professor Phoon Kok Kwang is the Provost at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and is presently a Cheng Tsang Man Chair Professor. A graduate of the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Cornell University, Prof Phoon is a geotechnical engineer and has been a faculty member in the NUS Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering since 1995 before joining SUTD. He has served as the Head of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (2013-2015), Vice-Provost (Academic Personnel) (2015-2020), and Senior Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs) (2020-2021). Prof Phoon is regarded as one of the foremost experts in applying statistics and data-driven methods to support decision-making in geotechnical engineering. He is a recipient of numerous awards, including the ASCE Norman Medal (2005, 2020), NUS Outstanding Researcher Award (2010), Annual Teaching Excellence Award (ATEA) (2011 and 2012), John Booker Medal (2014), and the Humboldt Research Award (2017). Prof Phoon was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Engineering Singapore in 2012.
