...with leadership development professionals in the Leadership Certificate Program

Just as businesses offer training programs for their high potential employees, the College will organize non-credit classes and seminars in leadership and host student-designed leadership projects. Students will study theories of leadership and develop management skills integral to success in all fields. Areas of study will include team-building, cross-cultural communication, negotiation, conflict resolution and goal-setting. Students will consider historic and contemporary leadership case studies and meet in small groups with outstanding leaders from government, business and NGOs. Students will have access to Leadership Assessment tools ordinarily available only to senior managers and earn a Leadership Certificate upon completion of the Program.

Active leadership, the kind demanded of public figures, corporate executives, and entrepreneurs, requires presence, eloquence, and vision. At the Yale-NUS College, professors illustrate eloquent public speaking and commanding stage presence in well-organized, stimulating lectures. In seminars, rather than dominate the discourse, professors stimulate student-driven discussion with incisive analysis and intellectual openness. This type of leadership, more passive than active, is essential to teambuilding and management. Extra-curricular activities are leadership laboratories. Organizing and inspiring your peers in student clubs and societies will be one of the most rewarding and hands-on ways to develop leadership skills. Leadership transcends rank, of course: non-officers can and must lead in teambuilding, idea creation, and other capacities for organizations to succeed.

Furthermore, the pioneering Yale-NUS students in the first few cohorts will take a major leadership role in shaping the culture and traditions of the College. Consider that decades ago, students at Yale founded the first college newspaper in the United States, the first a cappella singing group, the first student political club, and so many other traditions that are a treasured part of life at Yale today. Yale-NUS students have the opportunity to be the inventors and founders of traditions that can influence Yale-NUS centuries from now.
